Will you go Danish?

Hygge is the Danish art of creating time to relax, being cosy and spending time with friends. It’s about enjoying the outdoors, eating cake or partaking in life’s simple pleasures. Being with your loved one is prioritised, date night celebrated! Is hygge the secret to a happy life?

The Danes certainly believe this is the case and have the credentials to prove it. The Danish have taken the top spot 4 times in the last 5 years, as being the happiest people in the world, as published in the United Nations Happiness Report.

There is certainly something to said for actively planning “hygge” friendly time into your day. In our increasingly busy lives, when time is in short supply and demands and expectations are high it’s not always easy to prioritise time to simply be. But the Danes, I believe are onto something in their relentless pursuit of creating “hygge.” By lighting candles, creating a relaxing atmosphere, celebrating nature or simply enjoying a good story, they are allowing themselves valuable time out, to recharge their batteries, live in the moment and look forward to something simple – either alone or with friends and family.

Sweet treats are a yes, yes!

The Danes are all about creating memories, reliving hygge moments, enjoying sweet treats and sharing food. If you are interested in learning more, take a look at The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well (Penguin Life)by Meik Wiking. He is the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen. Apparently, Wiking is committed to researching what makes people happiest. He has concluded that “hygge” is the magic ingredient which makes Danes the happiest nation in the world.

When did you last make time to do something hygge? The simpler the better, your experience should be free or inexpensive. Seemingly spending lots of money detracts from how hygge something is! Your hygge moment should, preferably, be media free. Although getting cosy on the sofa with your loved one and a great movie, is allowed! Will you set some time aside to adopt a Danish way of living? See if you can join them in their ranking as some the happiest folk around!
