Why Confucius?

Whilst on a recent tour of China, our guide made lots of reference to “Confucius,” a famous Chinese philosopher, teacher, politician & editor. I love sayings and proverbs especially those that offer valuable advice for a more meaningful way of living, or encouragement to develop a positive outlook. So, I felt compelled to find out more about this highly regarded, wise and inspirational figure. Coincidently, Confucius was quoted at the start of each new chapter of my latest fiction read “The Women at Number 24” by Juliet Ashton. I decided this was definitely a sign! To follow are 12 of my favourite Confucius sayings.

So, there are definitely some valuable life lessons to be learnt from my favourite Chinese Philosopher! In today’s hectic society, now more than ever it is important to take heed of some good old fashioned advice. It’s easy to get wrapped up in all that is shiny, new and innovative but actually, keeping one’s feet firmly on the ground and prioritising what’s important rather than urgent, being proactive as opposed to reactive and striving for good health is essential!

Who is Confucius?

Kong Qiu, better known as Confucius, was born in 551B.C. in the Lu state of China and died in 479 B.C. Today he is widely considered one of the most influential teachers in Chinese history. One of Confucious’ guiding principles of life was, “Do not impose on others what you do not wish for yourself.” His teachings, preserved in the Analects, focused on creating ethical models of family and public interaction and setting educational standards. Confucianism later became the official imperial philosophy of China and was extremely influential during the Han, Tang and Song dynasties.
